Taking Care of Your Pet's Dental Health

Taking Care of Your Pet's Dental Health

Pet Dental health is important, our trusted staff at Animal Hospital of Loves Park would like to offer some tips for taking care of your dog's or cat's teeth. Oral hygiene is as important for our pets as it is for us, so it's essential to take steps to keep plaque, tartar, and other problems from mounting. Here are some things you can do to ensure that your pet maintains a healthy mouth:

Clean Your Pet's Teeth

The best way to do this is through the same time-honored method you use for your own teeth: Brush them. If you start while the animal is still a juvenile, he or she will soon get used to the process and will be co-operative. Older animals, on the other hand, may not be as eager to have a brush put into their mouths. If yours refuses to go along with the procedure, provide toys or treats meant to help remove plaque and tartar. These don't work as well as a toothbrush, but they're much better than nothing. This is especially true for those on a soft-food diet.

When brushing a pet's teeth, be sure to use special pet toothpaste. These pastes are made with ingredients that are safe for pets to swallow, while human toothpaste usually is not. Since pets reflexively swallow the foam from toothpaste, this is a very important consideration.

Take Your Pets to the Vet for Regular Oral Checkups and Cleanings

Pets' teeth are just like yours in their need for occasional professional cleanings. They get plaque on them that turns to tartar over time, and the tartar needs to be scraped off every so often in order to prevent gum disease. Since pets need to be sedated for cleanings, it is often recommended that they have them just once a year instead of every six months.

While your animal is under sedation, it's a good time to do a full oral checkup as well. This just involves taking a good look at the teeth, gums, and other oral structures. If anything is found that needs special attention, the vet will tell you about it.
